Seven Tips All First-Year College Students Should Know

College

One of the biggest and most exciting times in your life is the start of your college career. For many, it is their first-time leaving home and being on their own. As exciting as it may be, college can also be intimidating and overwhelming for many. If you are feeling anxious about your first year in college, you don’t have to be. By following these 7 tips, you can rest assured that your college experience will be everything you want and more. From hiring an essay writing service to dropping classes you don’t like, these tips are sure to help you succeed throughout your time in college.

  1. Get to Know Your Instructors

Your professors may seem intimidating at first, but once you get to know them, you will see that all they really want is to educate their students as best they can. Getting to know your professors is also ideal because they will see just how dedicated you are to learning and may be more willing to help you outside of class or even offer to be a mentor to you. When it comes time to get a letter of recommendation for an internship or job, these same professors will be able to help.

  1. Drop Classes You Don’t Like

Unlike high school, you aren’t forced to take any classes that you don’t like or you aren’t happy with. If you decide to change your major at any point, realize a class may be too much for you, or you simply aren’t interested in it anymore, feel free to withdraw from it. This is a much better option than continuing in the class and risking a failing grade. Dropping a class is simple and most of the time you can easily do it online.

  1. Hire an Essay Writing Service

Many people do not know that a custom essay writing company even exists, but the truth is they are a very real service that can be extremely helpful to college students. If you are ever in a bind where you don’t have time to finish an essay or you forgot about it, you can simply hire one of these academic professionals to write your essay for you. For a small fee, they will provide you with a completed, original essay that you can turn in. Best of all, you are guaranteed to get a passing grade on it.

  1. Learn to Take Notes

In high school, most students would simply take notes by copying whatever was written up on the board or on the PowerPoint presentation in front of them. In college however, things are a little bit different. During class, you have to be an active listener and important information won’t always be written down in front of you. If you are not a fast note taker or can’t take notes and listen at the same time, consider bringing a recorder to class so that you can simply record your lecture and then play it back later while you take notes.

  1. Visit Your School’s Career Centre

Many college students aren’t aware that these exist. However, your school’s career centre is a great source of information and consists of academic advisors that are there to help you with anything you need. These centres also often host career fairs where you can either learn about a potential job you are considering, or you simply want to network with recruiters or fellow students.

If you still can’t make up your mind about what career path you want to take, your advisor will be able to help you come up with a plan.

  1. Meet Your Deadlines

Regardless of whether you wrote a perfect paper or completed an assignment exactly as instructed—the second you turn it in late, it won’t matter. Many professors are sticklers for turning in assignments on time and may even take off half the points that your assignment is worth just for turning in something a day late. In college, extra credit is hard to come by so don’t count on that to bring your grade back up. Do your best to start assignments early and make sure you are aware of upcoming deadlines so that you don’t risk turning anything in late.

  1. Participate in Campus Activities

If you want to make friends easily or want to be a part of a club, participating in campus activities is the way to do it. This is a great way to meet your fellow peers while doing something fun. Many of these activities include things like ice cream socials, arts and crafts nights, cooking classes, and more. The more of these events you attend, the more likely you are to meet like-minded people who may end up becoming lifelong friends.
